Paper Plates and Napkins: How Many Do You Need for a Party?
Published 2026-10-26
Running out of plates halfway through a party is stressful, and so is ending up with a closet full of leftovers. A little planning makes it easy to buy the right amount. This guide explains which paper plate sizes to use for meals and desserts, how many plates and napkins to plan per guest, and which extras, like paper towels, make cleanup easy.
Choose the right plate size
Plates around 10 inches are dinner size, best for barbecues, buffets and full meals. Plates around 8.5 or 9 inches suit lighter meals, snacks and kids. Smaller plates are perfect for cake and desserts. For heavy or saucy food, choose plates described as soak-proof or coated, as thin plates can bend or leak.
How many plates per guest
A simple rule is two dinner plates per adult guest, because people often take a second plate or swap after a plate gets messy, plus one dessert plate per guest if you are serving cake. For kids' parties, plan on two to three smaller plates each. Round up to the next box size; unused plates keep for the next event.
How many napkins
Plan on three to four napkins per guest for a meal, and more for messy foods like wings, ribs or pizza. Large packs of 400 to 500 napkins are economical and useful to have in the house anyway.
Cleanup supplies
Keep a few rolls of paper towels on hand for spills, plus large trash bags placed in visible spots so guests can clear their own plates. After the party, store leftover plates and napkins flat in a dry closet so they are ready for the next birthday or holiday.
Other items to remember
Do not forget cups, plastic cutlery, serving spoons, foil to cover dishes and zipper bags for sending leftovers home with guests. A simple checklist taped inside a cupboard door saves last minute trips to the shop. Microwave-safe plates are handy for reheating leftovers the next day.
