Household Cleaning Supplies Checklist
Published 2026-10-26
Whether you are moving into a new place or just reorganizing the cleaning cupboard, it helps to know which supplies you actually need. A short list of reliable basics covers almost every surface in a home, and keeping them stocked makes weekly cleaning faster. This checklist goes room by room, explains what each product is for, and includes important safety tips for storing and mixing cleaners.
The everyday basics
Start with disinfecting wipes for quick wipe-downs of counters, handles and light switches; a glass cleaner for mirrors, windows and appliance fronts; and dish soap for dishes and many small cleaning jobs. Reusable microfiber cloths trap dust and grime without leaving lint, and they can be washed and reused many times.
Kitchen
Keep dish soap, a scrub brush and wipes near the sink. Bleach diluted according to the label directions can be used for disinfecting some surfaces, but always read the label first. Mold and mildew sprays are useful for grout around sinks. Large refill bottles of dish soap and glass cleaner cost less per use than small bottles.
Bathroom
A toilet cleaning kit with a brush, toilet bowl tablets, a mold and mildew remover and a glass cleaner covers most bathroom jobs. Wet mopping cloths are a quick way to clean small bathroom floors.
Safety tips
Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar or other cleaners, because this can release dangerous gases. Glass cleaners that contain ammonia should never be combined with bleach. Use cleaners in a ventilated room, wear gloves for strong products, and store everything in its original container, high up or locked away from children and pets. Read every label before use.
A simple weekly routine
A short weekly routine keeps cleaning manageable: wipe kitchen counters and handles daily, clean the bathroom sink and toilet once or twice a week, wash floors weekly and dust with microfiber cloths. Write down supplies as they run low and restock before they run out, so you are never left without the basics.
