How to Make Instant Ramen Better
Published 2026-10-29
A pack of instant ramen is cheap, fast and comforting, but with a couple of extra minutes it can taste like a proper meal. You do not need special ingredients. Eggs, a few vegetables, leftover meat and a sauce or two from the fridge door are enough. These ideas work for most brands of packet and cup noodles, whether you like a mild chicken broth or a spicy Korean-style soup.
Add an egg
An egg is the easiest upgrade. Crack it straight into the simmering broth for the last minute for a poached egg, or whisk it and drizzle it in while stirring for egg-drop style ribbons. A jammy soft-boiled egg cooked separately for about six to seven minutes and cut in half looks and tastes like a ramen shop topping.
Vegetables and protein
Frozen peas, corn and mixed vegetables can go right into the pot. Fresh spinach, bok choy, cabbage and mushrooms cook in a minute or two. For protein, add leftover rotisserie chicken, canned chicken, sliced deli ham, tofu, cooked shrimp or a few slices of SPAM browned in a pan. Even a handful of green onion makes a difference.
Season the broth
Use only part of the seasoning packet and add flavor in other ways to cut salt. A splash of soy sauce, a few drops of sesame oil, a spoonful of peanut butter, garlic, ginger, chili crisp or a squeeze of lime all change the character of the bowl. A slice of American cheese melted into spicy ramen makes it creamy and is a popular trick.
Try it dry
For a quick stir-fry, cook the noodles, drain them and toss with a little oil, soy sauce, sugar and garlic, then fry with vegetables and egg. Leftover sauce from takeout works too. Stir-fry style noodles such as Buldak or Cup Noodles Stir Fry already come with this kind of sauce if you want a shortcut.
