How Long Do Dry Pasta and Rice Last?
Published 2026-10-29
Pasta and rice are some of the longest-lasting foods in a pantry, which is why they are on every stock-up list. But not all of them keep the same way. White rice and plain dried pasta last a very long time, while brown rice, egg noodles and products with seasoning packets have shorter windows. This guide explains how to store each one and what to look for before you cook.
Read the best-by date
Most packages carry a best-by or best-if-used-by date, which is about quality rather than safety. Dry foods kept sealed and dry are often still fine to eat after this date, but flavor and texture can slowly decline. When you buy in bulk, write the purchase date on the package and use older items first so nothing sits too long.
White rice and dried pasta
Uncooked white rice and plain dried pasta made from wheat flour and water are very shelf stable. Stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry, dark cupboard, they keep their quality for a long time, often well beyond a year. Keeping them sealed also protects against moisture and pantry pests.
Brown rice, egg noodles and mixes
Brown rice still has its bran layer, which contains natural oils that can go rancid, so it keeps for a much shorter time than white rice; the refrigerator or freezer extends its life. Egg noodles, seasoned rice and pasta side mixes, and instant ramen contain fats or seasonings, so use them by the date on the package for the best flavor.
Signs to throw it out
Discard dry pasta or rice if you see signs of pests, mold, moisture, clumping from dampness, discoloration, or if it smells musty, sour or oily. For cooked pasta and rice, refrigerate leftovers promptly in covered containers and use them within a few days. When in doubt, throw it out.
