Budget Pasta and Rice Dinners
Published 2026-10-29
When grocery budgets are tight, pasta and rice do a lot of the heavy lifting. They are filling, store for a long time and pair with almost any protein or vegetable. With a jar of sauce, a few cans and some frozen vegetables, you can build a week of dinners without spending much. These ideas use common pantry items and are easy to scale for a family.
Pasta dinners
Spaghetti with jarred marinara and browned ground beef or turkey is the classic budget meal. Baked ziti stretches a pound of pasta with sauce and a little cheese to feed six or more. Pasta with garlic, olive oil, chili flakes and parmesan costs very little. Tuna pasta with canned tuna, frozen peas and a creamy sauce or lemon and oil is another fast, low-cost dinner.
Rice dinners
Fried rice uses leftover rice, eggs and frozen vegetables. Rice and beans with seasoned black beans, salsa and cheese is filling and inexpensive. Chicken and rice casserole with canned chicken, cream of mushroom soup and frozen broccoli feeds a family from one pan. Spanish rice burrito bowls with beans, corn and cheese are another easy option.
Stretch your ingredients
Buy pasta and rice in larger packs or multi-packs, which often cost less per serving. Cook a big pot of rice early in the week and use it for two or three meals. Add canned beans, lentils or eggs as budget-friendly protein, and bulk up sauces with frozen vegetables. Leftovers make next-day lunches.
A sample week
Monday spaghetti with meat sauce, Tuesday chicken and broccoli rice, Wednesday baked ziti, Thursday fried rice with eggs, Friday black bean burrito bowls. Each dinner uses a pantry staple plus one or two inexpensive add-ins. Keeping a simple list of go-to meals makes shopping faster and helps reduce food waste.
