What to Make with Canned Chili
Published 2026-10-28
A can of chili is more than a bowl of soup. Because it is already cooked and seasoned, it can become a sauce, a dip or the base of a casserole in minutes. These ideas use common pantry and fridge staples and are perfect for busy weeknights, game days and feeding a crowd on a budget.
Chili mac
Cook elbow macaroni, drain, and stir in a can of chili and a handful of shredded cheddar until melted. For a creamier version, add a little boxed macaroni and cheese sauce or milk. Chili with beans gives a hearty, one-pot dinner, while no-bean chili makes a smoother sauce that kids often prefer. Top with green onions or crushed tortilla chips.
Chili dogs and chili cheese fries
No-bean chili is the classic hot dog topping. Warm it in a small pot, spoon it over grilled or boiled hot dogs in buns, and finish with mustard, diced onion and shredded cheese. For chili cheese fries, bake frozen fries until crisp, top with hot chili and cheese, and return them to the oven for a minute to melt the cheese.
Nachos, dips and Frito pie
Layer tortilla chips with warm chili, cheese, jalapenos and sour cream for quick nachos. For a party dip, mix chili with softened cream cheese and a can of diced tomatoes with green chilies, top with cheese and bake until bubbly. Frito pie is a Texas favorite: corn chips topped with chili, cheese and onions, eaten right from the bag or a bowl.
Baked potatoes and rice bowls
Split a baked potato and fill it with chili, cheddar and sour cream for a filling meal. Spoon chili over rice with canned corn and black beans for a quick burrito bowl, or wrap the mix in tortillas with cheese. A large can is ideal for these recipes; refrigerate leftovers in a covered container and use them within a few days.
Quick chili soup
Thin a can of chili with a little broth and a can of drained beans for a fast chili soup, then top with cheese and crushed crackers. It is a handy trick when you need to stretch one can to feed more people.
