Cheap Meals with Canned Food
Published 2026-10-28
Canned foods are some of the most affordable groceries you can buy, and multi-packs bring the cost per can down even further. With a few basics like rice, pasta and seasonings, a well-stocked pantry can produce a week of filling dinners. Here are budget meal ideas built mostly from cans, grouped by main ingredient.
Bean-based meals
Rice and black beans with salsa is one of the cheapest complete meals there is. Black bean tacos or quesadillas use one can of beans, cheese and tortillas. Baked beans with sliced hot dogs is a quick, kid-friendly dinner. Add a can of corn and diced tomatoes with green chilies to beans and rice for a filling burrito bowl.
Tuna and chicken meals
Tuna pasta with olive oil, garlic and lemon costs very little per serving. Tuna noodle casserole stretches a couple of cans into a family dinner. Canned chicken works in quesadillas, chicken and rice casseroles with cream of mushroom soup, or BBQ chicken sandwiches. These proteins are fully cooked, so dinner is mostly assembly.
Chili and soup nights
Chili mac combines a large can of chili with a box of pasta and cheese for a hearty one-pot meal. Chili over baked potatoes or rice stretches one can to feed more people. Chunky soups ladled over rice, or condensed soups paired with grilled cheese, make quick and inexpensive dinners.
Tips to save more
Buy multi-packs of the cans you use most, and build meals around them. Combine cans with low-cost staples like rice, pasta, potatoes, eggs and frozen vegetables. Season with spices you already own instead of buying sauces for every recipe. Plan two or three pantry dinners each week to reduce takeout spending, and use up leftovers for lunch the next day.
A sample pantry week
Monday could be chili mac, Tuesday tuna pasta, Wednesday rice and black bean burrito bowls, Thursday chunky soup with grilled cheese, and Friday a chicken and rice casserole made with canned chicken and cream of mushroom soup. Each dinner uses one or two cans plus a staple, and leftovers become the next day's lunch. Keeping a short list of these go-to meals on the fridge makes grocery planning much easier.
