Thanksgiving Pantry Side Dishes Checklist
Published 2026-10-29
Thanksgiving dinner is mostly about the sides, and many of the classics start in the pantry. Stocking shelf-stable items a few weeks early means fewer last-minute store runs and less stress on the day. This checklist focuses on side dishes that keep well in a cupboard, so you can plan the menu, check what you already have and fill the gaps well before the holiday rush.
The core sides
Stuffing mix is the fastest route to a classic side and can also be baked in a casserole dish. Instant mashed potato flakes are a reliable backup or a time saver for large gatherings. Canned green beans plus cream of mushroom soup make green bean casserole. Canned corn and boxed mac and cheese round out the table, and a baked mac and cheese casserole is a family favorite in many homes.
Gravy, sauces and extras
Keep chicken or turkey broth for gravy and to moisten stuffing. Canned cranberry sauce, canned pumpkin for pie, evaporated milk, and baking basics like flour, sugar and butter are easy to forget. Crispy fried onions for the casserole topping and dinner roll mix or biscuit mix are worth adding to the list too.
How much to buy
A common planning rule for sides is roughly half to three quarters of a cup of each side per guest when you serve several dishes. One standard box of stuffing mix usually serves about six as a side; check the package for servings. Buy one extra box or can of the most popular sides, since leftovers are part of the tradition.
Plan your timeline
Shop for pantry items one to two weeks ahead and check dates on anything already in the cupboard. Make a simple oven and stovetop schedule for the day, since stuffing, casseroles and the turkey all compete for oven space. Stovetop sides like instant potatoes and boxed mac and cheese can be made at the last minute while the turkey rests.
