Soda Sizes Explained
Published 2026-10-27
Soda comes in more sizes than ever, and picking the right package can save money, reduce waste and make parties easier. A mini can, a standard can and a bottle all hold different amounts, and the best choice depends on who is drinking and where. This guide explains the common sizes you will see and when each one makes the most sense.
Mini cans: 7.5 fl oz
Mini cans hold 7.5 fluid ounces, a little over half of a standard can. They are popular for portion control, for kids' parties, and for people who want a small treat without opening a full can. They also mix well into recipes and drinks without leaving half a can to go flat. The trade-off is a higher price per ounce than larger packs.
Standard cans: 12 fl oz
The 12-ounce can is the classic size and the easiest to stack in a fridge. Fridge packs of 12 cans are designed to dispense one can at a time from the fridge shelf. They chill faster than bottles, are lightweight to carry, and are usually the best everyday value. Cans are also a good choice for coolers, picnics and lunchboxes.
Plastic bottles: 12 and 16.9 fl oz
Resealable plastic bottles are useful when you do not finish a drink in one sitting, in the car or at a desk. The 16.9-ounce size equals 500 milliliters and often comes in six-packs. The smaller 12-ounce bottle packs are handy for lunches. Once opened, keep the cap tight so the soda stays fizzy longer.
Glass bottles
Glass bottles, including 8-ounce bottles and imported 355-milliliter bottles, are often chosen for parties and for people who say soda tastes crisper from glass. Some glass-bottle sodas are made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup, which the label will state. They are heavier and cost more per ounce, so they are usually a treat rather than an everyday pick. For a party, a mix of mini cans for kids and standard cans for adults keeps waste low and lets guests choose.
