No-Cook Meals for a Power Outage
Published 2026-10-28
When the power goes out, the fridge and stove stop being reliable, but you still need to eat. Many canned foods are already fully cooked and safe to eat straight from the can, which makes them ideal for outages. Food safety guidance from the USDA recommends keeping the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible during an outage, so plan meals from the pantry first. Here are simple ideas that need no heat.
Protein plates
Drain a can of tuna or chicken breast and mix it with a single-serve mayonnaise packet or eat it plain on crackers. Vienna sausages and sliced SPAM can be eaten straight from the can with crackers and canned fruit. These plates take five minutes and need no cooking at all. Use clean utensils and eat opened food promptly.
Bean and vegetable salads
Combine drained and rinsed black beans, canned corn and a can of diced tomatoes with green chilies for a filling salsa-style salad. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime and a drizzle of oil if you have them. Canned green beans can be tossed with oil, vinegar and seasoning for a simple cold side. Eat with tortilla chips or crackers.
Room-temperature comfort foods
Canned ravioli, SpaghettiOs, baked beans and many ready-to-serve soups are fully cooked and can be eaten at room temperature, though most people prefer them warm. If you have a safe outdoor grill or camp stove, you can heat cans in a pot. Never use grills or camp stoves indoors because of carbon monoxide risk.
Planning ahead
Keep a few days of these foods together in a bin with a manual can opener, paper plates, plastic utensils and napkins. Choose single-serving or small cans when possible, since leftovers cannot be refrigerated during an outage. Include canned fruit in juice for something sweet, and store bottled water alongside your food. Rotate items into regular meals so nothing goes past its best-by date.
Kids and picky eaters
Familiar foods help kids during stressful events. Include a few of their favorite cans, crackers and fruit cups.
