Nespresso Vertuo vs Original Pods: How to Pick the Right Capsules
Published 2026-10-26
One of the most common coffee shopping mistakes is buying the wrong capsules for a Nespresso machine. Nespresso makes two separate systems, Vertuo and Original, and their pods are different shapes and sizes, so they do not work in each other's machines. This guide explains how to tell which system you own, what each one is best at, and how to choose capsules by roast and cup size.
How to tell which machine you have
Vertuo machines have a lid that opens upward and read a barcode printed on the rim of each capsule to set the brew size automatically. Original line machines use a lever and take smaller, bell-shaped capsules that brew espresso-sized drinks. If you are not sure, look at the model name on the machine or in its manual. Product titles for capsules usually state Vertuo or Original line, so always check that word before you add pods to your cart.
What Vertuo capsules are good for
Vertuo capsules come in several sizes, from espresso and double espresso up to mug-sized coffee. That makes Vertuo a good fit if you mostly drink larger cups of coffee or iced drinks. The double espresso capsules are especially handy for iced lattes, because two shots of coffee hold their flavor when poured over ice and milk.
What Original capsules are good for
Original line capsules are built around espresso and lungo shots. They suit people who drink espresso straight, or who make cappuccinos and lattes with a milk frother. Because the capsules are smaller, a 10-count sleeve goes quickly in a busy house, so it is worth having a backup sleeve of your everyday roast.
Choosing a roast
Blonde roasts are lighter and sweeter, medium roasts like a Colombia or Pike Place style are balanced, and dark roasts like Verona, Sumatra or French roast are bold and smoky. Flavored capsules such as vanilla or caramel are a nice change for weekends. Store capsules at room temperature in their sleeves or a drawer organizer, away from heat.
