How to Store Baking Supplies

Published 2026-10-31

Baking ingredients are usually bought in large bags and used a little at a time, so good storage protects both flavor and your budget. Heat, moisture, air and pantry pests are the main enemies. This guide covers simple ways to keep each common baking staple fresh for as long as possible.

Flour

Transfer white flour to an airtight container to keep out moisture, odors and pantry bugs. Stored in a cool, dry place, it keeps well until around the date on the bag. Whole wheat and nut flours, such as almond flour, contain more natural oils and can go stale sooner, so store them in the refrigerator or freezer and let them warm up before baking.

Sugar and syrups

Granulated sugar lasts a very long time if kept dry and sealed. Brown sugar hardens when it dries out; keep it airtight, and soften it with a slice of bread or a damp paper towel in the container overnight. Powdered sugar can clump, so sift it before using. Corn syrup and honey keep at room temperature with lids tightly closed.

Leaveners and yeast

Baking powder and baking soda lose strength over time, especially in humid kitchens. Keep the lids tight and use dry spoons. Opened yeast lasts much longer in the fridge or freezer. Write opening dates on the lids so you know when to test or replace them.

Chocolate, extracts and mixes

Store chocolate chips and cocoa powder in a cool, dry cupboard away from the stove. Warm temperatures can cause a harmless white bloom on chocolate. Keep vanilla extract tightly capped and away from heat. Boxed cake, brownie and pancake mixes should be closed well after opening and used by the date on the package.

Keeping pantry pests away

Pantry moths and weevils are attracted to flour, grains, nuts and mixes. Storing these items in sealed glass, metal or thick plastic containers is the best defense. Wipe shelves regularly, use older packages first, and freeze new bags of flour for a few days if you have had pests before. If you spot webbing or bugs, discard the affected item and clean the shelf well.
