How to Make Overnight Oats

Published 2026-10-27

Overnight oats are a no-cook breakfast you make in a jar before bed. Rolled oats soak in milk or yogurt in the fridge and soften into a creamy, pudding-like texture by morning. They are cheap, easy to customize and perfect for people who want breakfast ready to grab. Here is a simple base recipe, flavor ideas and a few tips so your jars come out right every time.

The basic ratio

Start with equal parts old fashioned rolled oats and milk, such as half a cup of each. For a creamier texture, swap part of the milk for yogurt. Add a pinch of salt and a little sweetener like honey, syrup or brown sugar if you like. Stir well, cover and refrigerate for at least several hours or overnight. Stir again before eating and add a splash of milk if it is too thick.

Which oats to use

Old fashioned rolled oats are the best choice: they soften well but still keep some texture. Quick oats work but turn mushier. Steel cut oats stay very chewy when soaked without cooking, so they are not recommended for a basic overnight recipe. If you need gluten-free overnight oats, buy oats that are specifically labeled gluten free.

Flavor combinations

Peanut butter and banana with a drizzle of honey is a classic. Try cocoa powder with a spoon of hazelnut spread, cinnamon with diced apple and raisins, or strawberry jam with a little vanilla. Add crunchy toppings like granola or nuts in the morning so they stay crisp. Chia seeds thicken the mix and add fiber; add a little extra liquid if you use them.

Storage and safety

Make three or four jars at once for the week. Keep them refrigerated and eat them within a few days for the best taste and texture, adding fresh fruit the morning you eat them. Glass jars or small lidded containers work best. Because the oats are not cooked, always use clean containers and keep them cold, just like any other dairy-based food.
