Mayo vs Miracle Whip

Published 2026-10-30

Mayonnaise and Miracle Whip sit side by side on the shelf and look almost the same, but they are not interchangeable in everyone's opinion. Some households grew up on one and cannot stand the other. The difference comes down to sweetness, tang and spice. If you are trying to decide which to buy, or wondering why a recipe calls for one specifically, this quick comparison explains what sets them apart.

What mayonnaise is

Real mayonnaise is an emulsion of oil, egg and an acid such as vinegar or lemon juice, seasoned with salt. It tastes rich, creamy and fairly neutral, which is why it is used as a base for so many sauces like aioli, tartar sauce, spicy mayo and ranch-style dips. Brands differ slightly in tang and richness.

What Miracle Whip is

Miracle Whip is sold as a mayo-like dressing. It uses less oil than real mayonnaise and adds sugar and a distinctive spice blend, so it tastes sweeter and tangier, with a slightly zippy finish. Its texture is a bit lighter. Because it does not meet the definition of mayonnaise, it is labeled as a dressing.

Where each one shines

Mayo is the better choice when you want richness without sweetness: tuna salad, potato salad, burger sauces, baking (some cake and biscuit recipes use mayo) and homemade aioli. Miracle Whip fans love it in egg salad, ham salad, sweet coleslaw and on bologna or turkey sandwiches, where its sweet tang adds a lot of flavor with no extra ingredients.

Swapping one for the other

You can swap them one-for-one in most cold salads and sandwiches; just expect a sweeter, tangier result with Miracle Whip, or a richer, milder one with mayo. For cooked recipes and dips where mayonnaise is a main ingredient, stick with what the recipe calls for. After opening, both should be kept refrigerated as the label directs.

Quick shopping tip

If you are buying for a household that has not decided, pick up a smaller jar of each and do a side-by-side taste on the same sandwich. Most people know their favorite after one bite, and you avoid being stuck with a big jar nobody likes.
