Gluten-Free Breakfast Cereals

Published 2026-10-27

Shopping for gluten-free cereal is trickier than it looks. Many cereals are made from corn or rice, grains that do not contain gluten, yet the finished cereal may still not be gluten free. The reason is often a small ingredient such as malt flavoring, which comes from barley. This guide explains what to look for on the box and highlights popular cereals that are labeled gluten free.

Look for the gluten-free label

In the United States, a food labeled 'gluten free' must meet the federal definition, which limits gluten to less than 20 parts per million. That label is the most reliable shortcut. If a box does not say gluten free, read the ingredient list for wheat, barley, rye, malt or malt flavoring and check whether the product could contain gluten from shared equipment.

Why some corn and rice cereals are not gluten free

Classic corn flake and crisp rice cereals often contain malt flavoring for their toasty taste. Malt is made from barley, so those cereals are not gluten free even though their main grain is. Oats are naturally gluten free but are often grown and processed near wheat; oat cereals labeled gluten free use specially sorted or tested oats.

Popular cereals labeled gluten free

Several well-known cereals carry a gluten-free label, including original Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios, Chocolate Cheerios, Lucky Charms, and Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles. Recipes can change, so check each box every time you buy, especially if someone in your home has celiac disease. Flavored versions of a gluten-free cereal are not automatically gluten free, so read every box rather than assuming. When you find a cereal that works, larger bags and family sizes are an easy way to stock up.

Keeping a gluten-free breakfast safe at home

If only part of the household eats gluten free, store gluten-free cereals on a separate shelf and use a dedicated scoop. Wipe counters before pouring and avoid sharing bowls of toppings like granola that may contain gluten. Add fruit, yogurt or nuts for a more filling bowl, and always follow the advice of a doctor or dietitian for medical diets.
